Bronx Community Justice Center Digital Media Art Exhibition (2021)
In 2021, we worked with Bronx Community Justice Center youth participants to create a digital photo series titled “Bringing Back the Light.” During their residency in the LeadershipWorks program funded by NYCHA, youth were immersed in an intensive study that gave participants the opportunity to learn the basics of photography and digital art creation.
Bringing Back the Light was an exhibition that showcased a collection of “Light Painted portraits” by and of the program participants. Light Painting is a technique of image creation that uses light directly, such as LED flashlights, as a “paint brush” to illuminate a subject or space during a long exposure photograph. The experiential body of work examines light, time travel, community, injustice, inequality, harmony and transformation. Certain portraits are intended to demonstrate feelings of hope and triumph, while others showcase resilience through personal reflection.
The public art exhibition was created for the residents of the McKinley and Forest Housing developments in the bronx and was an homage to the community the youth resided in.
